It's that time of year again.. finals. In my opinion, the worst time of the year. Having one or more tests a day for a week is not my cup of tea. It's easy to fall into negative habits during this time. Energy drinks, high fat foods, skipping workouts, etc. It's important to remember that you don't necessarily have to pick up these habits during finals week. Last spring, I was that girl. Drinking numerous energy drinks, stuffing my face with poptarts and a bunch of other unhealthy things. I guess I was just trying to be the stereotypical college student during finals week. In reality, I felt disgusting. I was bloated and I actually had a harder time focusing on everything. So even though it may seem impossible, there are a few things that can make it a little easier. :)
Prepare snacks and meals ahead of time. I got this picture/idea from Taralynn McNitt. Keeping track of what you're eating and planning it ahead of time is a great way to stay on track. It is especially helpful during finals when you don't have extra time to figure out what to eat or prepare food. When you have these premade snacks there's no excuse to eat those donuts or poptarts. ;)
Pick healthy options from restaurants/cafes. I basically live in Starbucks during finals week. Sometimes, it's hard not to stare at those huge cookies or coffee cakes..but I remind myself that there are other options that will make me feel better in the long run. Instead of a cookie or cake, go for a whole wheat bagel or oatmeal. These options have complex carbohydrates and fiber that will keep you full and energized to get your though your study sessions. Keep in mind that this doesn't only apply to Starbucks, be mindful wherever you go. :)
Don't drink your calories. This one is HUGE during finals week. Energy drinks and coffee drinks are the main culprits here. Packed with sugar and sodium, these are sure to set you up for a major crash. Try to get some natural energy from taking naps or getting a good workout. Green or black tea is another great option to get your caffeine fix.
Make working out your study break. Nothing cures stress like a good workout. Finals are super hectic and you may be pressed for time but even 30 minutes in the gym can make a difference. It's a great opportunity to clear your mind and listen to your favorite songs. A workout can also wake you up and give you a boost of energy when you're feeling brain dead.
I hope these few tips help you have a successful and healthy finals week. Keep you head up and work hard. You can do it! :)
Good luck!
